Secretary Nelson Takes Voter Education Tour to UTRGV

Edinburg, TX – Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson took her voter education tour to the Rio Grande Valley, holding a press conference at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg. The tour is designed to ensure Texans know the changes to voting requirements ahead of the March 5 Primary Election.

“If you are an eligible Texan who plans to vote in the primary elections, now is the time to decide when and where you will cast a ballot,” said Secretary Nelson. “Early voting in person ends Friday, March 1, and Election Day is March 5.”

Secretary Nelson works alongside university leaders and county officials across Texas to make sure qualified Texans, including students, have the information needed to cast a ballot.

“We appreciate Secretary Nelson’s commitment to making sure UTRGV students have all the information they need to cast a ballot,” said Dr. Guy Bailey, Ph.D., President of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.“UTRGV is committed to educating students and to helping them understand the responsibility of being conscientious citizens. Secretary Nelson has been a key partner in making that happen.”

The Secretary highlighted key information detailed at VoteTexas.gov, including the seven approved forms of photo ID Texans can use to vote in person:

• Texas Driver License
• Texas Personal Identification Card
• Passport
• Texas Handgun License
• Military Identification Card
• Citizenship Certificate
• Texas Election Identification Card

It is important to note a student ID is not one of the approved forms of photo ID.

Voters who do not have and cannot reasonably obtain one of the seven approved forms of photo ID can fill out a Reasonable Impediment Declaration at the polls and present an alternative form of identification, such as a utility bill, bank statement, government check, or a voter registration certificate.

Early voting runs through Mach 1. Election day is March 5.

Earlier in the day, Secretary Nelson spoke at the Webb County Elections Office in Laredo.
