About the Corporations Section

Beginning June 1, 2018, HB 2856 85(R) amended Section 5.053 of Texas Business Organizations Code to adopt the “distinguishable in the records” standard for entity names. The new name rules are set out in the Texas Administrative Code, Title 1, Chapter 79, Subchapter C. For more information, please review the distinguishable in the records standard requirements.

The Corporations Section is responsible for the receipt, filing and permanent maintenance and retention of documents that create or affect business organizations and non-profit entities under several Texas statutes. You may access a list of these statutes.

The Section also provides records information by telephone and email and provides plain and certified copies upon request. Although the Section continues to accept documents by fax and mail, an increasing number of documents are received through electronic submission on SOSDirect.
