AUSTINTexas history was made today when Esperanza “Hope” Andrade of San Antonio Texas formally took the Oath of Office as the 107th Secretary of State at the State Capitol Building.

Appointed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Andrade is the first Hispanic woman appointed as the Texas Secretary of State.

As Secretary of State, Andrade serves as one of six state officials to form the Executive Department of the State. Andrade serves as Chief Election Officer for Texas, as liaison to the Governor for Texas Border and Mexican Affairs, and as Chief International Protocol Officer for Texas.

“Hope’s dedicated public service and business savvy have made her an indispensable asset to the state of Texas,” Perry said. “I look forward to working with her to continue to make Texas the greatest and most prosperous state in the nation.”

Secretary Andrade has been a successful businesswoman and a leader in the San Antonio community for many years.  Andrade has received numerous accolades for her work, having received the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award and the San Antonio Leadership Hall of Fame Award.  Andrade was also appointed to the Texas Transportation Commission in 2003. 

“I am honored to work with Governor Perry and serve the state of Texas as the 107th Secretary of State,” said Andrade.  “As the chief elections officer of Texas, I will protect the integrity of elections as part of our democratic process – a process that Texans value and respect – and work proactively to keep Texas at the forefront of the global economy.”

Andrade resides in San Antonio with her husband of 40 years, Ramiro Andrade, and has a son, Michael, a daughter-in-law, Leticia, and two grandsons, Diego and Ramiro.
